Portfolio
My name is Patricia Kraemer and I graduated as a diploma school registered nurse (RN) almost 34 years ago. My experiences in nursing are varied and I have enjoyed the flexibility nursing allowed in my personal life. I have spent the last 16 years as a inpatient obstetric nurse at Munson Medical Center (MMC). Since becoming an employee of MMC in 1995, I have become more aware of the professional role of an RN. MMC holds their nurses to high standards and offers many opportunities to grow. I began to appreciate the demonstration of professionalism and commitment of nurses at MMC on the various shared governance committees on which I serve. It was these nurses that influenced my decision to seek a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). The following is a portfolio designed to demonstrate my accomplishments in meeting the Bachelors of Science in Nursing program outcomes through Ferris State University (FSU).
The FSU website defines the BSN outcomes as:
This portfolio is divided into sections based on these categories with examples of the work done throughout the BSN program reflecting these categories placed in these sections. A portfolio “is utilized as a mechanism of self directed learning (SDL) and as a medium for recording achievements…. serves as a catalyst for growth and to develop in depth knowledge both personally and professionally” (Timmins & Dunne, 2008, p.332). Thus, I will use this portfolio to reflect on the growth and knowledge I have gained throughout the BSN program. This reflection will introduce each section and will consider how these accomplishments have allowed me to grow in the practice of professional nursing.
It was difficult to define much of my work as belonging to only one outcome. The FSU outcomes and ideas are interconnected in many of the projects throughout the program. This recognition of the many layers of the program is evidence of how well the BSN program has taught me to view the many dimensions of professional nursing.

The FSU website defines the BSN outcomes as:
- Collaborative Leadership - Provide collaborative leadership roles in the provision, delegation, and supervision of nursing care while retaining accountability for patient safety and the quality of that care.
- Theoretical Base for Practice - Integrate theories and knowledge from the arts, humanities, sciences and nursing to develop a foundation for nursing practice.
- Generalist Nursing Practice - Organize the interdisciplinary health care needs of diverse populations across the lifespan toward achieving the goal of healthy individuals, families, groups and communities.
- Scholarship for Practice - Assimilate current evidence into the practice of nursing.
- Health Care Environment - Advocate for improving health care across the continuum of health care environments.
- Professionalism - Demonstrate a level of professionalism that is congruent with the inherent values, ethics and behaviors of the discipline of nursing. (FSU, January 17, 2011)
