Collaborative Leadership
In the first document of this section, Community Health Nursing Roles, I compare the roles of a nurse whose focus is on the community to the nurse whose focus is on the individual within the community. I am able to take that comparison a step further by identifying how collaboration with the area maternal child nurses and health department nurses affects the maternal-child population I work with every day. This type of collaborative leadership is necessary to ensure the quality and continuum of care needed by the families in the Grand Traverse region.
The next two papers include group work in the development of a senior daycare (Helping Hands) in Mecosta County and my assessment of my roles in this project. The project of a senior daycare recognizes the leadership and teamwork involved within the community necessary to provide a safe and quality environment for senior citizens in Mecosta County. The self-assessment paper acknowledges my roles in the development of this project. The project was divided into sections before the final paper was put together. As a group, we worked well together in sharing ideas in each section but I demonstrated leadership by being the initiator and manager for many of the sections and developing the budget with very little help as discussed in the self-assessment paper. Additionally, I discovered a serious miscommunication in the central concept of what a senior daycare is and enabled the group to have the discussion to clarify ideas before we could work further on the project. I also learned to recognize the need to prevent miscommunication in future group projects by making sure everything is clear from the start.
In the nurse manager paper, I recognize the roles of my manager and how she collaborates with the health care team at Munson Medical Center. In recognizing her roles, I realize how my own behavior, in response to her leadership, affects the quality of care given to our patients. I need to use my own leadership skills to assist in meeting the department goals.
I have included documentation of my current Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) Instructor card. Being a NRP instructor requires that I instruct and assess anyone involved in the care of infants at my institution to ensure that they maintain the standards of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program. Through this, I demonstrate leadership by providing education and skills assessment to the members of the maternal child team throughout the year.
I serve on a shared governance committee in my department currently as the co-chairperson of the Operations Committee and on the hospital wide committee, the Maternal Child Council (MCC) as co-chair. Through this service, I demonstrate a commitment and leadership to nursing within my department and to my hospital. I recently started the cohesiveness subcommittee of the MCC to look at the issues we are having between departments. It is my goal to improve communication to facilitate better patient care and improve nursing satisfaction.
My thoughts on collaborative leadership have changed dramatically because of these studies through the Bachelors of Science in Nursing program (BSN). I have learned that all nurses need to show leadership, whether it be through patient advocacy, self-advocacy or nursing advocacy, and this leadership impacts the care given to all.
