Professionalism
The final outcome of Ferris State University’s (FSU) Bachelor of Nursing program is professionalism. The first document included is the paper I wrote in the Introduction to Professional Nursing class on my proposed service learning. I quote that paper in saying “This learning experience will provide a way for me to make a contribution to the community while enhancing what I learn by my personal engagement in my service to that community. It is a way to perform my civic duty, in addition to meeting professional nursing leadership standards, through working to “create and maintain healthy work environments in local, regional, national, or international communities” (ANA, 2004, p.44). I will attach the final power point on my service learning upon completion. Because of a personal interest, I have spent the last 2 Octobers working with the American Cancer Society during their Breast Cancer Awareness functions. I have learned about the work of the American Cancer Society and the grass root movement of the local community in breast cancer awareness and support. I have alternately faced inclement weather, done manual labor and been wined and dined at some of the nicest places in the Grand Traverse Area. Moreover, what I have learned to value the most is the spirit of the women and men in the fight against this equal opportunity disease and what a difference this has already made.
In the study of Communication Paper, I looked at how poor communication between health care providers affects patient safety. In this study, my research led to the conclusion that to effectively communicate with the rest of the health care team, a nurse must demonstrate professionalism. Communication is not only done through the spoken word. Professionalism can be shown by education, and the use of evidence based practice, certification and self-assuredness. By demonstrating our professionalism, we demand respect and can improve our communication abilities to improve the quality of patient care.
The next three documents are my diploma from nursing school, my certification in inpatient obstetrics and my membership in the professional organization, Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses, and my acceptance to the Clinical Advancement System level III (CAS III) at Munson Medical Center. The acceptance into the CAS system is the biggest example of my professionalism, to date. To qualify for CAS III, I must be certified in my specialty, be a member of a professional organization, maintain the equivalent of 25 continuing education credits per year, and demonstrate the tenets of Magnet. It is more than just giving lip service to my profession and I must defend my status annually. Upon completion of my Bachelor of Science in nursing, I will be eligible to apply for a level IV status. I have also attached an award received through FSU for academic excellence. Future students will need to present their grades with their portfolios. Since this portfolio pre-dates this requirement, I do not have access to my individual grades. I offer this as a substitute for proof of my academic efforts.
Lastly, included are a prospecting cover letter for a position as a clinical instructor with the local community college and my resume. I have enjoyed mentoring associate degree students and new employees to my department. With the partnership Munson Medical Center has with Northwestern Michigan College, I hope to combine my current position in Maternity with a clinical instructor position. This will allow me to try teaching while maintaining my status and seniority at my present job.
